Lesotho (pronounced ‘lay-su-too’), is an independent state entirely landlocked by the Republic of South Africa. Formerly known as “Basutoland”, it was a protectorate of the United Kingdom until it established independence in 1966. Nicknamed the "Mountain Kingdom”, it is the only nation in the world that sits entirely above an elevation of 1,000 meters (3,300 feet). Lesotho has a population of just under 2 million, and is one of the poorest nations in the world. It’s prevalence of HIV/AIDS is staggering, with current estimates between 24 and 28 percent of the population.
